Meningococcal Meningitis

Meningitis in General

-The purpose of this project is to establish a connection between the disease meningococcal meningitis and the body's defense mechanisms.

-Meningitis infects the meninges (layers of tissue that protect the brain and spinal cord).

-A rapid inflammation of the subarachnoid space (located within the layers of tissue in the meninges) occurs.

-Bacterial and Viral meningitis:

Viral meningitis is generally not serious, and can be fought off with rest and fluids.

Bacterial meningitis can be life-threatening. Different species of bacteria can affect people in different settings.

-Meningococcal meningitis is one type of bacterial infection caused by the bacteria Neisseria Meningitidis.

-It is a blood-borne form of the disease that travels into the cerebrospinal fluid via the blood.

-If not treated immediately, patients may suffer the threat of death or serious brain damage.
