Meningococcal Meningitis

Prognosis:

-With early treatment, meningococcal meningitis has a fair prognosis (13% mortality rate).

-The overwhelming majority of patients who receive early treatment make a full recovery within a few weeks

-Of those who survive, 85% make a full recovery, while 15% suffer from neurological defects (such as hearing and sight loss), loss of limbs, learning difficulties, or paralysis.

With late treatment:

-Permanent brain damage or death is more likely to occur, and the prognosis for death spikes to anywhere from 50-90%, depending on the circumstances.

-Sometimes death occurs even with early treatment, since the disease progresses so quickly. With late treatment, the possibility of death increases with complications such as seizures or tissue damage.
